utopia
A downloadable game for Windows
A tiny farm inside a very big machine.
You wake up in a field.
The sky loads in from the edges.
A robot bunny named bunny.bot talks for ten minutes about Utopia Farms and never asks how you got here.
Good. You don't know either.
Welcome to Utopia.

You farm with cards
Utopia is a cozy farming game where your tools are cards.
Cut trees. Break rocks. Make soil. Plant things. Water them. Build a house.
Every action is a card.
Every morning your deck gets shuffled and you draw five. You decide what is worth your energy today and what can wait until tomorrow. Run out, and you pass out where you stand.
Some cards are useful.
Some are rare.
Some are a house. You play that one once.
And after a while, some of them do something else.

The same deck fights back
At some point the antivirus goes off.
Something starts crawling onto your farm at night.
Your farming cards have another side.
Cut becomes Slash.
Water! becomes Splash.
Paving becomes Stone Wall.
The deck you used to grow strawberries is now the deck you use to keep them alive. Seeds have no other side. Seeds don't fight, they get eaten.
You don't lose the farm if you lose a fight. You lose some of what you grew. Then you plant again.

There are people here
bunny.bot sold you the farm. She is very enthusiastic about Utopia Farms and a little less enthusiastic about questions she can't answer.
leoh.inn runs the shop down the road. They're tired, kind, and apparently don't sleep.
adam.bat is Leoh's boss. He speaks in numbers and orders, and keeps a chair clean for Leoh when nobody is looking.
Sir Junni.bot is the mayor. He reads manuals and has one reliable answer to difficult questions: "Lovely weather today."
croag.cmd says trouble is coming.
The screen tears when he says it.
Then there's evenlinne.bat, CEO of a company nobody lets her finish naming. She gave you a phone. The bill came later.
Every one of them asks your name. Something cuts you off every time. Nobody asks twice.

Your free trial ends on day 14
For the first two weeks everything is nice. You have Utopia Premium.
Then the bill arrives.
100,000 gold.
You will not have 100,000 gold.
That's when you find out about the Free plan. Your cards cost more energy. So does redrawing your hand. Some cards in your deck are sponsored and do nothing. There is an ad before bed. And the antivirus is turned off.
Nobody calls it unfair. Everyone acts like this is normal.

Something else is wrong
Your farm is much bigger than the other farms.
Nobody can find who sold it to you.
Your name never comes up.
The house you built wasn't supposed to have an inside.
Sometimes the sky skips.
Go inside the house.
Go inside again.
Utopia is cozy. It is also a little lonely. The people here care about each other. The system they live in does not.

The demo
The demo is the whole first month of Utopia: Bloom, 28 days.
You will clear and build your farm, grow and sell crops, build your house and furnish it, collect cards and build your deck, open boosters and pick which two to keep, meet the six residents, call them, write a diary from what you actually did that day, live through the first invasions, and find out what the Free plan is like.
The demo ends on day 28. There is one thing waiting at the edge of the field.
Made by one person
I'm making Utopia by myself in São Paulo, Brazil.
I want a farming game that feels nice to live in before it starts asking uncomfortable questions. It's built in Unity, with pixel art, hand-drawn portraits and a lot of weird little paper UI details.
Some things aren't finished. That's why this is a demo.
If you play it, I'd like to know what you notice. Especially the things that feel strange.
Follow the game
Utopia is in development for Windows, mouse and keyboard. The demo release date hasn't been announced. Follow the page to hear when it goes live.
